12/18/08 Varsity Wins First League Game
After a string of tough pre-season losses, the Varsity Soccer girls on Wednesday proved that they were more than ready for league games. In their first seasonal game, the Falcons beat Wilcox 2-1.
The Falcons came out strong, showing dominance as soon as the game started. Within 15 minutes, the team earned its first goal by #3 forward Kari Clark with an assist from #9 right forward Ren Norris. The team continued to dominate with several more shots on goal, but was not able to net more points before the first half was over.
The second goal came from a penalty kick. About 10 minutes into the second half, as Kari Clark dribbled into the box with the goalie coming toward her, a Wilcox mid-fielder rushed up and shoved Kari, causing her to fall to the ground. Although the goalie managed to put her hands on the ball, an inside the box foul was called. Falcons #5 mid-fielder Sloan Lewis took the kick sending a shot into the right inside of the net.
Hope for a shut-out diminished at 8 minutes before the end of the 80-minute game. Excessive short passes in the defense zone to the left of the box left a hole that allowed Wilcox to cross a fast ball to the front of the net while another rushed up to finish it off.
The Falcons girls were nevertheless jubilant about their win; they have endured many tough games to get to this win. The girls will go head-to-head against Gunn High on Friday, 12/19.
Go Falcons!
